Germany’s new FM goes on official visit to Ukraine
“Ukraine will determine whether our Europe remains a place where freedom and human dignity count – or a continent where violence shifts borders,” Wadephul stated, according to Germany’s Federal Foreign Office.
He emphasized that Germany remains committed to aiding Ukraine, viewing the country’s defense of its freedom and sovereignty as critical to the stability and liberty of Europe as a whole. Wadephul called the protection of Kyiv’s independence and future “the most important task of our foreign and security policy.”
Accusing Moscow of seeking to “subjugate” Ukraine, Wadephul argued that Russia is relying on a decline in European support. He stressed that Germany would maintain its assistance, saying, “We will continue to stand firmly by Ukraine's side so that it can continue to defend itself successfully — with modern air defense and other weapons, with humanitarian and economic aid. That is the promise with which I travel to Kyiv today.”
He also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of refusing to compromise. Wadephul claimed that Putin “wants surrender, not negotiations.”
Germany, he said, would persist in efforts to limit Russia’s ability to finance its war efforts through sanctions. He added that these efforts are ongoing “with the utmost pressure” in coordination with the European Union and G7 partners.
